Our mission

Every small and mid-size business deserves a trusted advisor in their corner, bringing the same senior leadership that large corporations take for granted, at a fraction of the cost.

Your goals become my purpose.
Your growth becomes my mission.

About

You work directly with me. From first call to final result.

I'm Carlos A. Buentello, founder of CB Strategic Advisors. I started this firm with a clear belief: every small and mid-size business deserves access to the same caliber of senior leadership that large corporations take for granted, without the overhead, the bureaucracy, or the one-size-fits-all approach.

Over more than two decades as a CFO and senior executive across healthcare, transportation, logistics, aviation, real estate, and public-sector organizations, I've built deep expertise across the full spectrum of what makes a business work, accounting and finance, human resources, marketing, technology and software infrastructure, network and AI integration, legal and contract management, and risk and compliance. I don't just know the numbers. I know how the whole machine runs.

My approach is straightforward and practical. I don't believe in complexity for its own sake. I leverage technology intelligently, ask the right questions, and make decisions based on what actually works not what sounds impressive. My goal is simple: my services should pay for themselves through results you can measure. Better margins. Cleaner operations. Fewer headaches. More time for you to focus on what matters most whether that's your family, other businesses, or the parts of your company that only you can drive.

Most client relationships start with a single conversation. Some grow into a focused project. The ones that work best often evolve into an ongoing advisory partnership: a fractional CFO relationship where I become a consistent, trusted presence in your business. I never push for more than what genuinely serves you. Trust is built through results, and results come before anything else.

One advisor. A network of specialists when you need them.

Some engagements call for deeper specialty knowledge: tax counsel, IT architects, HR specialists, insurance brokers. When that's the case, I bring in trusted collaborators from a vetted network. You always have one point of contact: me.

How we work

I don't deliver decks. I walk alongside you.

Most advisors parachute in, run an analysis, and hand off a binder. I don't. My engagements are built around partnership, meaning a sustained presence in your business, with the discipline to know when to step back and the willingness to step in when it counts.

01

Listen

Every engagement begins with quiet, careful listening. I learn your business, your people, and the goals beneath the goals before I ever recommend a path forward.

02

Diagnose

I assess where you are with the rigor of an internal team across financials, operations, risk, technology, and talent, then identify the highest-leverage moves available to you.

03

Implement

Implementation is where most advisors disappear. I stay. From boardroom decisions to AP workflow rollouts, I'm at your side until the work is done until the wins compound.

What we do

Four critical areas where small and mid-size businesses typically get stuck and where I help move the needle. Whether you need help in one area or across multiple disciplines, I bring the same hands-on rigor to every engagement.

Questions

What you need to know first.

Common questions from business owners exploring fractional CFO advisory and strategic guidance.

What exactly is a fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is an experienced financial executive who works with your business part-time or on an as-needed basis. Unlike a full-time CFO, you get senior-level expertise without the overhead of a salary, benefits, and permanent headcount. I bring 20+ years of CFO experience to small and mid-size companies that don't yet need, or can't afford, a full-time executive.

How much does fractional CFO advisory cost?

Pricing depends entirely on scope. Some engagements are project-based (a one-time financial review or restructuring). Others are retainer-based (ongoing guidance over 6–12 months). The best way to understand cost is to have a conversation, which is always free. Many businesses find fractional advisory to be 40–60% less expensive than a full-time CFO, with greater flexibility.

Do I need a full-time CFO, or would fractional be enough?

That depends on your stage and complexity. Typically, if you're under $20M in revenue and don't have a full financial team in place, fractional is both smarter and more economical. I'll tell you honestly which path fits your situation, my goal isn't to maximize my hours, it's to give you the right structure at the right time.

What if I have a bad relationship with my current accountant or bookkeeper?

I work alongside, not against, your existing team. If there's friction, we'll diagnose the issue together. Sometimes it's a communication gap, sometimes a skills mismatch. I won't push unnecessary changes, but I will be honest about what you need to move forward.

Can you work with my business remotely?

Absolutely. Based in Brownsville, Texas, I serve clients across the United States remotely using video calls, shared documents, and modern collaboration tools. For major implementations or critical meetings, I'll visit your office in person when it matters.

What if I'm not sure where to start?

That's exactly what the free 30-minute intro call is for. Bring the problem keeping you up at night, whether it's cash flow, growth strategy, compliance, or just a sense that something isn't right. I'll listen, ask questions, and tell you honestly whether I can help.

How are you billing? What if I only need one project?

Billing is handled through a formal engagement agreement tailored to your specific needs. Some clients need a one-time project (financial review, restructuring, process improvement). Others want ongoing fractional CFO support on a monthly retainer. Others use a hybrid model. We discuss your needs on the intro call and prepare an agreement that reflects the actual scope and timeline. No surprise invoices. Everything is transparent and agreed in advance.

Is This for You?

Does your business fit any of these scenarios?

Most of my clients come to me with one or more of these challenges. If this sounds like you, let's talk.

Scaling Fast, But Systems Are Fragile

You're growing revenue but your financial controls, operational processes, or technology infrastructure haven't kept pace. Cash flow is unclear. You don't have visibility into profitability by product, service, or location.

Fit: Financial Strategy + Operations

Compliance Concerns Keep You Up at Night

You're in healthcare, financial services, or another regulated industry. You're unsure if your practices meet current regulations (HIPAA, employment law, OSHA, etc.). You want to move forward with confidence, not guesswork.

Fit: Risk & Compliance

You're Considering Growth. Acquisition, Merger, or Major Pivot

You've spotted an opportunity to grow (acquire a competitor, merge with another firm, enter a new market, launch a new service line) but you need a financial partner to evaluate the move and structure the deal.

Fit: Growth & Transformation

You Need a Trusted Advisor, Not Just a Vendor

Your accountant handles tax compliance. Your lawyer handles legal issues. But you don't have anyone in your corner thinking holistically about your business someone who understands operations, finance, risk, and growth in concert.

Fit: All areas

Getting started

How working together begins.

Every relationship starts simply: a conversation, no cost, no commitment. Here's what the path looks like from first contact to ongoing partnership.

Step 1: Review & Agree to NDA (~5 minutes)

Before we talk, take a few minutes to review our mutual Confidentiality Agreement. This protects the privacy of both parties and every conversation is covered, whether or not a formal engagement follows.

Review & Agree to NDA

Step 2: Free 30-Minute Intro Call

Free

This is where we start. Schedule a free 30-minute call directly through Calendly. We'll talk about your business, what's working, what isn't, and what you're hoping to change. I'll share my honest initial read, and we'll both decide if moving forward makes sense. No pressure, no pitch.

Step 3: Paid Consultation (If You Want to Go Deeper)

If the intro call reveals that a deeper conversation would be valuable, we move into a formal consultation scoped to your situation and agreed in advance.

  • Video consultation: 1-hour minimum, available for clients anywhere in the U.S.
  • Onsite engagement: 2-hour minimum for clients in the Rio Grande Valley. For other locations, travel costs (flights, lodging, meals, transportation, parking) are scoped and agreed in advance.

Step 4: Project or Ongoing Partnership

Some engagements are a single project: a financial review, a process improvement, a compliance audit. Others grow into an ongoing fractional CFO relationship with a monthly retainer. I never push for more than what genuinely serves you. The engagement always follows the work, not the other way around.

Note on billing: The intro call is always free. Paid consultations and ongoing engagements are billed through a formal engagement agreement and never through Calendly. The agreement addresses scope, fees, NDA, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, independent contractor status, Texas governance, arbitration, and any applicable provisions (HIPAA, law firm subcontractor arrangements, etc.).

What Happens on the Free 30-Minute Call

Listen & Learn (First 15 mins)

You describe the situation, what's working, what isn't, what prompted you to reach out. I ask clarifying questions to understand your business, your team, and your goals.

Assess & Advise (Middle 10 mins)

Based on what you've shared, I give you my honest initial read . I share where I see quick wins, where deeper work is needed, and whether this looks like a good fit for both of us.

Next Steps (Final 5 mins)

If you'd like to go further, we discuss what that looks like: scope, format, and fees. If not, you still walk away with a clearer picture of your situation than when we started.
